Quilt Venice

Last weekend I did a 2-day 'Light up your Landscape' class with Australian Gloria Loughman, an internationally acclaimed award winning quilter .  We had to take along photos of landscapes we could turn into a quilt...plus our fabric stash of suitable colours!

We had spent Christmas of 2007 in Italy and - of course - had some great pics to choose from.  This is a bit different to having photos in an album, this memory you hang on a wall.

We used freezer paper to make a pattern then steam-a-seam lite to raw edge applique.  During the class Gloria included mini-tutorials on things like colour theory (in a user friendly way), design and patternmaking, threads and needles combinations for machine, painting fabric for special effects,  choosing and using decorative threads,  finishing, etc.
Usually Gloria puts facings on her quilts, but she suggested mine would be better with a border, then a facing.  I included a tiny inner border as well.

We had two days of fun and amazing teaching with Gloria, and she also had a trunk show presentation  on the Tuesday night.  What an incredible range of work and what a fabulous lady.  Google Gloria Loughman to see her work!

Here are some of the photos I used to design my quilt.

I used a mixture of batiks and hand dyed  fabrics, and stitched it with variegated thread.

Rose Doily

NovemberSketch; AGoes w Sentiment; Birthday; Stash

I started with the rose brad for this card, and it all came together once I found the brown stripe.  The background paper is stamped with a flourish in gold ink, and the edges of the tag and doily are inked.

All of the items were from my stash!  And no, your eyes aren't playing tricks, the paper is shaded like ombre.  I've had this gorgeous metal rose for ages and never really found a card that 'deserved' it.

tag you're it!

Tag; Festive fun; Anything goes; Christmas decorations

There are some great images around, especially at Christmas, and with a bit of this and that  - hey presto! a tag is born.  Isn't he cute?

Label Die: Spellbinders

The edge of the card, the label and the pic have their edges inked.  Image coloured with Reno pens.  The organza ribbon is gold and looks better in real life.  I like off-kilter and hang-over-the-edge things, and this is a good way to use up those booboos - you know the ones when the die cuts off an edge or the paper moves as you are cutting and you end up with one corner off!

Paris view

Paris; Anything goes

Bonjour!  From just about anywhere in Paris there is a view of the Tour Eiffel and I decided to make this the point of the card.  Imagine waking up each day to this lovely pink sunrise, with the flowers in your window box refreshed from the dew overnight.  It seems to me that most of the interiors of French homes are very neutral, and the colour is mostly outside, so that's what I have done here.

I made the background by smooshing distress inks in pinks lavenders and blues, and aged the window frame a bit.

Whiteout

White on white; Mostly white; Three diecuts

I Love the look of white on white, but it needs lots of texture and layering so that it doesn't look flat and boring.  So here we go: the leaves are several diecuts, the roses are an embossing folder punched out, the circles underneath are loopy rings.  Layers created with dimensional foam.  I like the wriggly ribbon too.

Watercolour Kitty

VLV3; Watercolour; One for the Girls

Isn't this the cutest?  I love line drawings unadorned, coloured, and blocked (that's what I call it, I don't know the real term for it), where a block of colour is put down  and stamped over, or stamped and a block of colour put over. It seems to give such a spontaneous and lively feeling to the pic.

Not square; birthday; Anything goes.

I found this great backing paper ages ago and have never used it until this hat - perfect!  Cut out the hat shape with top fold (and no, it is not symmetrical, I didn't want it to be), cut out the backing paper slightly smaller, then decorated.  Stamped sentiment in white on black (a little blackboardish), made some flowers from 'ugly' paper - and guess what ? Kisses

Sketch127Sketch with a Twist, Winter Birthday, Anything Goes, Festive fun; Use mostly white.

This was the result of a booboo.  I tried to heat emboss some white embossed card.  The result was not what I expected, as the e.p. stuck to everything!  But what did happen was that it looks enamelled and the colour of the card changed slightly.  Seredipity.

I diecut a window in the embossed-embossed card and stuck the slightly coloured image underneath using  dimensional foam so the snowperson is inset.  Sentiment diecut.   Snowy's body is dressed with Wink of Stella, and four acetate heart-kisses.

Warm wishes

How do you get a winter card going that doesn't make you feel colder than ever?  Hopefully using the warmer blues and turquoise shades instead of white!  And wearing mitts-hat-coat and boots to feel warm & cosy on the inside.

The little girl is stamped and coloured with Lyra watercolour crayons.  Backing papers are torn to show white and layered, then highlighted with Kindyglitz for snow.  Trees diecut, inked in olive-y greens, Kindyglitzed (snow sparkle) and stuck down with the edges left free. The girl and the stamped sentiment circle are adhered with dimensional foam.  Gotta have some gems to  sparkle things up a bit.

Joyful Santa

One layer Card

I love this Santa stamp, he looks so friendly and fun, and it really is a simple image perfectly suited to being stamped with Hero Arts Ombre ink.  I then masked the image and stamped with scratchy band in red.  Sentiment stamped on top with overlap into image.  Stars painted with Kindyglitz. Cloud slumber

Add Texture, Anything goes 254

I didn't want a pretty-pretty baby card and thought this worked well.  I coloured the image with Reno pens.  I found the largest cloud used upside down fitted under the baby if I sliced open the drape at the RHS.  I covered the largest cloud in the muslin so it puffed and wrinkled (who says clouds don't have wrinkles?), then diecut a frame from muslin - it is sufficiently sheer that it softens the outline of the picture but accentuates the shape.  The other clouds I covered with glass beads for sparkle, and made a strip of muslin for the bow.  I like the effect of the muslin and will try again it in other ways... maybe pleated or torn or inked?

What a fabulous inspiration photo, I had so many ideas I didn't know where to start!  The wee posy tied with ribbon was so lovely on its own, however a little bit of texture and a sentiment in that gorgeous vintage look script just had to have some doilies.  I didn't want another Christmas card, but thought this was lovely for a birthday.

Animals are one of the main features of Christmas in lots of ways.  I've always loved Pink Petticoat's (Liz) images, and this is one of her reindeer.  Isn't he cute in his bowler hat with a sprig of holly?

I photographed some cashew nuts, printed them out on the computer then over stamped with a  jar. Stamped the lid on gold paper.
cut a fishtail banner in layers and sanded the edges a bit.  The neutral paper background has subtle tiny vari-coloured dots.  I very rarely do neutrals, finding it difficult to make them look interesting, but this one seems to have worked.

Sparkle wishes

Sprinkle/Sparkle
I always think I don't do a lot of sparkle, but then I look back on my work and think ... well, actually I do.  This is a little more sparkly than usual, but he is such a cute mouse and he deserves it!

I stamped the dark blue card and heat embossed it silver, then dry embossed a frame around it.  The mouse is coloured with Reno pens, then sprinkled with fine glitter; the balloon is coloured and sprinkled with bold glitter.  The diecut circle edge is dipped in versamark ink and embossed, with just some fine sprinkles of embossing powder to add a party feeling.  When dry I layered them over the diecut image for 3D effect.  Self adhesive glittery ribbon strips just to complete the picture and anchor it.

This is for my son who is a teacher.

I found this blackboard paper (which inspired the card actually) and had to work out how to use it!
The blackboard is cut out and I wrote on it with yellow coloured pencil, and adhered with thin dimensional foam.  The man is cut out and adhered with thick dimensional foam, and simply arranged on matted patterned paper.  Keep it simple is my motto.

Pretty in Pink

I think she is everybody's daughter or granddaughter or sister or niece.  Everybody knows someone like this.

After I had paper pieced the headband, skirt and shoes, I decided I liked the rest in black & white, so left it like that.  I reckon it makes the skirt look even lighter and fluffier.   It just needed a few touches like pearls and a ribbon, fancy corners and a coloured underlay to finish it off.

I don't want to put a sentiment on because it looks so clean and fresh, but it will be for granddaughter Holly's birthday.

Believe Joy Wonder

This chick looks so excited that it's nearly time to decorate. Clearly, she loves this time of year and can't wait.
I guess this could be classed as  a non-traditional Christmas card, and these are colours I almost never work in.  But I had to this time because I found these copper and bronze sequins ... enough said.   For the sketch I have used panels of lace and ribbon to represent the vertical elements, wobbled the oval a bit and added more sequins, just because more is more!  and don't you just love the little pearl bauble?  And the wink of Stella to give her a bit of glam.

Merry P

Pointsettia and holly seem to be the traditional festive florals, however we hardly ever see them here.  Our NZ Christmas tree is the Pohutukawa tree which flowers through December into January with fat fluffy powder-puffs of red blossom with gold stamens, such a sight to see at Christmas.  The other flower we see at Christmas is the white Christmas lily, which I think in the northern hemisphere is called the Easter lily.  Because it's summer here at Christmas, all our flowers are out in a riot of colour in all shades, which is maybe why we don't stick to the traditional colours.

A great sketch to work with, one which I will be sure to use again and again in different ways.

I like working with sketches but found this one more difficult.  I wanted a clean, fresh, modern look for Christmas using non-traditional colours and non-traditional motifs.  I pretty much managed that, but in the end just had to use this cute angel charm.  The papers are really a bluey-greeny colour and are both sides of the same dotty-checky paper.
