Meri Kirihimete

The pohutukawa tree is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it flowers at Christmastime. The leaves are a sage green and the flowers bright red with a dusting of yellow stamens.

Pōhutukawa and its cousin rata hold a prominent place in Māori tradition. Legends tell of Tāwhaki, a young warrior who attempted to find heaven to seek help in avenging the death of his father. He fell to earth and the crimson flowers are said to represent his blood.  Meri Kirihimete is maori for merry christmas.

The flower is cut from red metallic card and also gold glitter card, the sentiment is cut from red metallic card.  The patterned paper has metallic red stripes.

I do love the card. I would never have thought to combine the background with the image, but it's kind of mesmerizing.

So glad you joined us at Die Cut Divas for our challenge of using flowers in your project.
