Challenge Quilt 2017

Finished in August 2017 for the NZ Quilt and Craft Fair September 2017, Page 33 Challenge.
It was called a Page 33 challenge which means entrants were given page 33 from random magazines to use as inspiration for their quilt.  Some people got fashion pages, car pages, gardening pages, and I got a house page.  The geometric shapes, strong perspective and soft colours were what inspired me.

Apart from having a connection to the inspiration page, the quilt had to fit within a 0.5 metre square, have three layers and obvious quilting elements.  We could use anything on that page for inspiration (e.g. words, colours, shapes etc).

I used several techniques: raw edge applique, piecing, 3D panel, and common quilt blocks.  Beaded embellishments represent the chandelier and the flowers on the table. I moved the furniture around a bit.

It got first prize.  I was overseas at the time and didn't know it had won.

Scary Boo!

I made this to give to the little girl next door and, as she is a crafter, hopefully she might pick the bits off and re-use them.  The bat can flap it's wings, and the ghost and bats eyes glow with Kindyglitz.

Autumn Mouse

Look at this face!  How sweet? And this will go nicely with a gift box of specialty teas.

I wanted to keep it as simple as possible, so just  embossed a border onto the card to frame it.  I embossed the veins in the leaves by hand and inked the edges with antique paper distress ink, and glued them so the edges are lifted off the card.

Boo!

A not-too-scary hallowe'en card.  I used a bit of inking on the sentiment and the small items, and some 3D foam to pop the spider, fence, pumpkin & skull.  I just thought when I did this, wouldn't the pumpkin & skull make good buttons? Hmmmm

Daffodil Cheer

Don't daffodils always look cheerful?

I used these for the stitching challenge at the Crafters Café, here: crafterscafeblogchallenge

Mouse Dancer

Stitching!  real or faux, that's the story at the Crafters Café.  See the great ideas from the design team, here: crafterscafeblogchallenge

Thanks to Rick St Dennis for this beautiful image' get it here: rick1949/sugar-plum-fairy-mouse-digital-stamp

The background image was masked and smooshed with Oxide Distress inks, then diecut.   I decided to 3D the mouse with foam and I'm glad I did, she looks like she's coming out of the page.  Layered the diecut over pink florists nonwoven wrap, stamped the sentiment on vellum and machine stitched it on.  The mouse is kept white and the dress and wings painted with watery mica watercolour paint.

Travelling Man

The challenge at the Crafters Café this time is Boys will be Boys, so check out the design team's work and join the challenge here: crafterscafechallenge

The Crafter's Cafe Challenge Blog

Lisa at Decosse Doodles provided the great paper and elements (all from the "Touch of Class" range), check out her site here:

I guess because in NZ we are a 2.5 hour flight from our nearest neighbour and are so isolated, we are a travelling nation, so I decided on a card for a big boy (after all, boys will be boys and hop on a plane when they feel like it).   I don't know of a single New Zealander who hasn't been out of the country at some time, and a lot of us like to travel a lot!  Kiwis can fly!

Game Birds

Another challenge at Come And Get It challenges - this week it's "use two different embellishments", check it out: cagichallenge

I love this image from our sponsor Pickled Potpourri: pickled-potpourri.com/hunting-fowl-digital-stamps

My two different embellishments are a feather and brads.

I printed the image, then masked it for the stencilling and splatter (which unfortunately I could not get to show up very well in the photo).      Click on for a closer look.

Journey - going for a spin

Made for a family birthday for someone who likes action.   Simple but a bit of fun.
I made the background with Glimmer Mists.
For the spinner I just cut a square from double sided patterned paper and then slots from the corners almost to the middle. Holes pierced in each corner and folded the points to the middle, attached together with a tiny metallic brad.
Words inside say "A birthday is the first day of another 365 day journey, enjoy the trip!"  I thought the travelling spinner was totally appropriate.

Distressed Words

Such great words to encourage someone, especially if they are going through a rough patch, or even if they're not.  Everyone needs to hear these words.

I made the background cards.  The large background is Distress inks sponged onto glossy photo paper; the smaller background is a play with Oxide Inks with distressed edges.

Wild Soxes

I love using things differently, so this time stamped on patterned paper to make wild socks to go with a man's gift of wild socks.  On the outer socks the paper pattern doesn't show as well because of the black ink.  The real socks are big polka dotted and very bright and fun!
